The future of video content: 3 trends to watch

Video content is evolving quickly, and staying ahead of the curve is crucial for creators and brands looking to make an impact. As technology advances and audience habits shift, here are some key trends to pay attention to.

1. Even shorter short-form video

Platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts have cemented the popularity of shorter content. With shrinking attention spans, brands and creators must craft engaging, quick-hitting videos that capture interest within seconds. To achieve this, your video should have a strong hook, include eye-catching shots, and have a snappy edit – this will hopefully keep your audience engaged from the start.

That said, longer videos (2 minutes plus) are still performing well on platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, and regular YouTube, where audiences are more willing to invest time in in-depth content.

2. Sustainability

As the climate crisis escalates, sustainable video production techniques such as remote shoots, virtual sets, and energy-efficient editing workflows are gaining traction. Companies that prioritise sustainability will stand out in the industry.

An example of a carbon-intensive task would be gathering interviews in different parts of the country (or world). Often people think of Zoom as the answer here, and it can work well in some cases, but there’s an even better way! Consider hiring a local crew, or exploring sustainable travel options as we have done. This will reduce the carbon footprint while still delivering quality content.

3. AI-powered video

AI is transforming video creation, from automated editing and scriptwriting to smart colour correction. These tools help streamline workflows and create highly personalised content. For example, AI editing software can quickly sort through footage, picking the best clips based on quality and movement, saving creators valuable time. AI-driven transcription tools are also great for adding subtitles, making videos more accessible and engaging.

However, AI requires a lot of processing power, which increases energy and water use. To stay sustainable, creators should use AI for specific tasks rather than relying on it for every stage of production, balancing efficiency with environmental impact.

Looking ahead

The future of video content is dynamic, fast-moving, and filled with opportunities. Whether you’re a creator or marketer, staying adaptable and embracing new trends will be key to success in the ever-evolving digital landscape.

Keeping up with the latest trends ensures your content stays relevant, engages audiences, and makes the most of new technologies and platforms.

I'm an experienced video producer/director with credits across some of the biggest BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 shows/brands. With over 10 years of industry experience across multiple departments, I've been able to gain a well-rounded set of skills that help me communicate clearly with and help our clients take their digital content to the next level. In my spare time, you'll usually find me either working out, at the cinema, or mapping out the best coffee spots in Manchester... but I'm probably at my happiest whilst playing video games on the sofa with my little girl.
