Kids tell their coaches how to put them first

One thing that will never get old is connecting with new clients that align with our values and vision…cue Play Their Way. Play Their Way is a fabulous campaign by organisation UK Coaching who are encouraging children and young people to get moving and engage in exercise by using a ‘child first’ approach to sports coaching. It’s currently estimated that only 47% of children regularly exercise so Play Their Way supports coaches to encourage children and young people to to exercise regularly in a way that they enjoy.

We loved their ethos and what they’re striving for, so when they approached us for two video projects it was a very natural, ‘yes!’ We spent a total of four days filming content around the UK with coaches and young people, trying to communicate the importance of ‘voice, choice and journey’ – the key pillars of Child-First Coaching, and to hear voices and opinions from both coaches and young people. This was a unique project for us as most of our charity projects are about comms and fundraising, whereas this was more about providing resources for coaches who want to get to grips with Play Their Way’s principles, so we had to approach it in a slightly different way than we usually would.

With this project, we really had to think about the edit before shooting in order to know what we needed to capture and how to approach it to get the most out of our contributors. We needed to communicate the fab work that Play Their Way are doing and their commitment to prioritising young peoples voices by making them the focus of the video while the coaches react to the young peoples thoughts and stories.

It was great to work with Ben and the Studio 91 team. It felt like they just ‘got it’ and were able to be efficient, creative partners who helped us craft some of our best videos to date.

We’ve loved working with the team at Play Their Way, and we’re looking forward to hopefully creating more coaching video content with them!
